Be intentional. Be confident. Be decisive. These are all themes of recent conversations I’ve had with friends and mentors. While these themes apply to life at large, let’s focus on them from a career perspective today.
Once you’re on a path, you can let momentum do its thing and carry you forward. Yes, you still have to work hard, I’m not saying the work is easy. But being on the path is easier than jumping to a different path, or even considering that our current path might not be right for us. How often do we lift our head from our day-to-day work to look at what’s coming on the path. Are we stoked about what’s coming? Do we see ourselves thriving in the roles our bosses currently have? It’s OK to not have all the answers to those questions. But we should at least think about them and be intentional about our choice to stay on our current path or try something else.
Maybe we figure out what we want to do, or at least what we want to do next. That’s amazing! Do you have the confidence to make that move? To ask for what you need? To apply for that dream job you’re almost qualified for? There are people less qualified than you who are doing what you wish you were doing because they had the confidence and courage to go for it.
To make moves, we have to be decisive. We can’t waffle around, knowing we are unhappy and unwilling to make a decision. Let’s see an opportunity and be decisive about it. Yes, I am going to go for this, or no, this isn’t the right time but here is what I’m going to do instead. It’s not always saying yes, but it is about always making a clear decision rather than watching from the sidelines.
Don’t let your career happen to you – take proactive role in making your career what you want it to be.
