My program within Kellogg started a series of “TED Talks” for students to share their stories. Last night, the topic was “where or who is home for you?” The two talks we heard were incredibly moving and powerful.
The stories are not mine to share. Instead, here is what I learned:
- There is a beautiful resilience in making wherever you are feel like home by creating relationships that feel like family.
- Your mental health is valuable. It is an asset, and it is important to take care of it.
- Your hometown is often viewed as part of your identity, but for some people, identity is rooted in the people they love.
- While the United States may feel highly polarized at times, I am fortunate to live in a stable country. Some people left a home that is dear to them and do not know what kind of home they may return to… or if they will be able to return.
There is so much beyond what we see or observe through someone’s behavior. My classmates demonstrated incredible courage and vulnerability in sharing their experiences with us. And their stories are helping us all become more empathetic. To those classmates, thank you.
